Why Watamu is Kenya's best beach secret

Watamu sits 100 km north of Mombasa and 20 km south of Malindi, protected within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that covers the marine national park, mangrove forests and adjacent terrestrial habitats. It has never developed the resort density of Bamburi.

The beach is extraordinary — fine white coral sand, warm turquoise water protected by the offshore reef, and a village scale that means it rarely feels crowded even in peak season. Ocean Sports and Aqua Ventures offer some of East Africa's best diving on the Watamu reef, and the turtle monitoring programme at Local Ocean Conservation gives guests meaningful wildlife encounters.

Getting to Watamu

Watamu is 100 km north of Mombasa — about 2 hours by road (B8 coast road). Malindi Airport (MYD) is 20 km away with daily flights from Wilson Airport Nairobi. Private transfers from both Mombasa and Malindi are readily available.
