Where to stay: island vs north coast

Mombasa island holds Fort Jesus, Old Town and the working port. It suits architecture and history over beach access. The short-stay market sits on the north coast, across Nyali Bridge: Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu run a continuous strip of modern apartment blocks and serviced flats behind reef-protected beaches, with City Mall and Nakumatt Nyali covering retail. Most travellers base on the north coast and visit the island as a half-day.

Rates

Coast rates run below Nairobi for equivalent space. Studios at KES 2,500–4,500, one-bedrooms at KES 3,000–6,500, two-bedrooms at KES 5,500–10,000; true beachfront carries a premium in all categories. Dry season (December–March, July–October) pushes rates up; the April–June long rains bring significant discounts on the same inventory.

Arrival and local transport

From Nairobi: one hour by air to Moi International, or five to six hours on the SGR. Book the morning train and arrive with time to spare. On the ground, tuk-tuks and ride-hailing cover the north coast cheaply. The Dongo Kundu bypass has removed the Likoni ferry bottleneck, making the south coast and Diani a clean onward connection.
