The Serengeti: earth's greatest wildlife spectacle
The Serengeti National Park (14,763 km²) is the largest protected area in the entire Africa migration ecosystem. The Great Wildebeest Migration is perpetual — over 1.5 million wildebeest and 400,000 zebra circle the ecosystem year-round following rain and grass.
Zones by season:
— January–March: Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) — calving season. Thousands of wildebeest calves and massive predator action.
— April–May: Long rains — migration moves north and west. Fewer tourists.
— June–July: Western Corridor — migration follows the Grumeti River. Grumeti crocodile crossings.
— August–October: Northern Serengeti (Lamai, Kogatende) — Mara River crossings. Peak drama. Most expensive.
— November–December: Short rains. Migration returns south. Good photography, fewer tourists.
Beyond migration: The Serengeti has Africa's highest lion density, large leopard and cheetah populations, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (with the Crater) on its eastern boundary.
