Where to stay in Marrakech
The Medina — staying inside the medina walls in a riad is the most authentic Marrakech experience. Riad Zitoun, Mouassine, Bab Doukkala are the best neighbourhoods within the medina.
Gueliz — the French nouvelle ville. Modern apartments, coffee shops, art galleries. More organised than the medina but less atmospheric.
Hivernage — upscale, near the Palais des Congrès, good for business visitors.
For first-timers: a medina riad is non-negotiable for at least the first 1–2 nights.
What is a riad?
A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central courtyard garden, often with a fountain. The best riads have rooftop terraces where breakfast is served overlooking the Marrakech skyline and the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque. Many have been beautifully restored by Moroccan and European owners.
