Kyoto: where to stay

Gion — the geisha district. Machiya townhouses, flagstone streets, the best chance of seeing a geiko or maiko in traditional dress. Premium but magical.
Higashiyama — the eastern hills. Kiyomizudera Temple, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka stone-paved lanes. Most picturesque area.
Arashiyama — western Kyoto. Bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji temple garden, the Oi River. Best for ryokan experience.
Kawaramachi — central Kyoto. Shopping, Nishiki Market (Kyoto's kitchen), Pontocho dining alley.
Fushimi — southern Kyoto. Fushimi Inari (10,000 torii gates, best visited at dawn).

Kyoto transport

Buses cover most temple areas. The Keihan and Hankyu rail lines for east-west movement. Cycling is excellent on flat central Kyoto. Kyoto is 2.5 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen (bullet train). Osaka is 15 minutes by Shinkansen.
