Istanbul's best neighbourhoods
Sultanahmet — the historic heart. Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar. Most touristy but genuinely unmissable.
Beyoğlu (Taksim / Galata) — modern Istanbul's cultural centre. Istiklal Avenue, Galata Tower, best rooftop bars, international restaurants.
Karaköy — the hip, revived port district. Design hotels, excellent coffee, ferry connections to Asian shore.
Kadıköy — the Asian shore. Istanbul's most authentic neighbourhood. Local market, best meze restaurants, the real city.
Beşiktaş — between Taksim and the Bosphorus. Arnavutköy's wooden mansions, the most beautiful waterfront.
