Cape Coast: history and conscience

Cape Coast and nearby Elmina contain two of the most important historical sites in the African diaspora: Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle. Both were major slave-trading fortresses from the 15th–19th centuries — the last sight of Africa for millions of enslaved people sent across the Atlantic.

Both are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites and pilgrimage destinations for the global African diaspora, particularly visitors from the Americas and the Caribbean. The tour of the slave dungeons, the 'Door of No Return', and the chapel built directly above the male slave dungeon is one of the most profoundly affecting experiences available anywhere in the world.

Kakum National Park — 30 minutes from Cape Coast. One of West Africa's most famous wildlife reserves, best known for its canopy walkway 30 metres above the forest floor, connecting seven platforms in the rainforest canopy.
